Recipes for the "mystery substance" (silly putty) and for Oobleck:
Silly Putty: Use 2 cups of white school glue, 1 1/2 cups room temperature water, 1 cup warm water, 3 teaspoons borax powder (can be found in the laundry detergent aisle at the store). Add the room temperature water to the glue in a large mixing bowl. Dissolve the borax powder in the remaining cup of water. Slowly pour the dissolved borax into the glue ande water mixture, stirring constantly. Important: Kneed the material for about 1 minute until it is smooth and has lost its stickiness.
Oobleck: 1 cup of water
1 to 2 cups of cornstarch
mixing bowl
Food coloring (optional)
Pour one cup of cornstarch into the mixing bowl. Now pour the water in, mixing slowly as you go. Add more cornstarch if it gets too runny and more water if it becomes too thick. Hold a handful in your open palm, what happens? Try squeezing it in your fist or rolling it between your hands= How does it behave differently?
